Saw-leaf Zelkova of Yonggungsa Temple
"Zelkova trees belong to the elm family and are found mainly in Korea, China, Japan, Siberia, and Europe.
The zelkova trees at Yonggungsa Temple are estimated to be about 1,300 years old. These ancient trees form a pair known as the grandfather tree and grandmother tree.
The trees measure 5.63 m in circumference and about 20 m in height, with a crown spread of about 16 m.
According to legend, the grandfather tree strangely extends its branches only toward the grandmother tree. In the past, women who were unable to have children would come to Yonggungsa Temple to pray, drink the mineral water at Yonghwanggak Shrine, and make a wish at the grandfather tree. It is said that they were later able to conceive."
