Painting of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Kings of Yonggungsa Temple
"Painting of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Kings of Yonggungsa Temple was created by Buddhist monk painters active in Seoul and Gyeonggi during the modern period. Hyegwadang Bonggam led the work as the head monk painter, with Hangokdang Donbeop serving as the assisting monk painter.
In paintings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Kings, compositions consisting solely of the Ksitigarbha Triad and the Ten Kings were rare. This format does not appear in Goryeo or late Joseon works, with only a few examples known from the 16th century. The iconographic details of the figures also clearly show the lineage of monk painters in Gyeonggi and Seoul.
The painting reflects Bonggam’s style as a member of the Heungguksa Temple group of monk painters, while also showing his artistic connection with Donbeop. It is also significant because the painting remains in its original condition from the time of creation, with the votive objects inside still preserved."
